What the Data Says

About Benefits for Students

Improved Teaching and Learning

A 3-year study of 14 schools in the UK found evidence of more positive attitudes to learning, better behaviour and attendance, and improved standards and achievement. Importantly, the findings showed that sustainability was a significant factor in improving teaching and learning in these schools by “providing a meaningful, real-world focus which young people recognise as significant for their lives.” (Evidence of Impact of Sustainable Schools, 2010: 3)

Improved Leadership and Social Participation

There is strong evidence that “involving young people in discussions, decision-making and action to do with how the school and community responds to sustainability, provides a firm foundation for their future social participation and leadership, and results in improved behaviour. “ (Evidence of Impact of Sustainable Schools, 2010:6)

Improved Health and Cognitive Function

Thirty years of public health research have demonstrated that improved indoor environmental quality is associated with better health outcomes. Recent research by the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health has demonstrated positive impacts of green-certified buildings on cognitive function:

  • 26.4% higher cognitive test scores

  • 6.4% higher sleep quality scores in high-performing, green certified buildings

  • 30% fewer symptoms in high-performing, green certified buildings
